A zonzo per… Lorenzana

Quarrata

The name Quarrata appears for the first time in a document dated 1779. Probably the name comes  from the surname Quarratesi, very common in the area.It looks as if time had stopped in this borough of Lorenzana, the view reminding that of a fairy tale. In ancient times the the red wooden door represented the beginning of the road called “Via del Sito” connecting Lorenzana with Lari, an important political, administrative and agricultural center, for centuries the “capital” of our Pisan Hills.

La croce di legno

The Wooden Cross

The wooden cross on the facade of a building, according to tradition, was a prayer station for the Via Crucis on Good Friday

The villa  occupies an area of 1800 square meters with a volume exceeding 20,000 cubic meters. The elongated structure follows the ridge of the hill on which it rests. Il Castello

The castle

The church

The current church was rebuilt between 1848 and 1850, after the earthquake of August 14, 1846.Lorenzana citizens manually transported the bricks from the kiln near Pian della Tora to Lorenzana.

La vecchia Lapide

The old stone

In 1877, following the reform of the measurements,  the kingdom government decided to place a stone plaque displaying the conversion from the old PISANE measurements to the new decimal metric measurements. Such stone plaque was placed at the exterior of every town and borough involved in the reform, including Lorenzana, for everyone to see, learn and respect.

La palla di cannone

The cannonball

At the beginning of the 1900s, the iron ball was found in a field in Pian di Laura by Florio Gori, the town’s municipal policeman. It was then walled up in his house. It  had probably been fired into the valley from the upper part of the town where the castle was located until mid 1400 when it was destroyed by the Florentines following the war between Pisa and Florence.

Antichi Bagni

Old bathrooms

People washed in metal tubs and for physiological needs they had to make do with small toilets almost always located outside the house. There was no toilet seat but a simple hole in the floor plugged with a piece of wood to prevent smell and critters from entering  the house. The houses did not have inside drains like today.

Palazzo Lorenzani

Lorenzani palace

The Lorenzani family had ani mportant role in agriculture and werewell-known notaries in the city of Pisa where the family moved to after purchasing a beautiful palacein Lungarno Mediceo. The surname Lorenzani was given to the family members by the Pisan people because in the Middle Ages it was customary to add the place of origin to the first name. After the Lorenzanis, the property passed into the hands of Count Serughi and was subsequently divided into two parts: the portion on the left of the gate was bought by Count Passerini (currently owned by Sforni); the portion on the right of the gate was purchased by the Schiavini–Cassi counts and, subsequently, also took the name “Schiavini–Cassi–Scotti” (currently this portion is divided among several owners).

La contea di Lorenzana

The county of Lorenzana

On 9th May 1722 Cosimo III dei Medici, by  a grand ducal rescript, elevated Lorenzana to the higher state of fief, with the title of county, and placed it under the rule of  Francesco Lorenzi, a Florentine nobleman. Count Francesco was succeeded by Count Luigi and subsequently by Francesco Orlando, the third and last count of the dynasty, who returned the fiefdom in 1783, because he had no male descendants.
The Lorenzis’ assets were purchased by Count Testa for a value of 26,000 Tuscan lire.  With the return to the Grand Duchy of Lorraine, the municipality of Lorenzana was reconstituted with the addition of the hamlets of Tremoleto, Collalberti and Vicchio and became part of the podestà of Rosignano, in the chancellery of Lari.
